The fuse panel comes with the entire cab harness. Most suffer from moisture issues from water leaks from the windshields or other cab leaks over time. Big job.....

One of our 04 t800 last year had major corrosion issues. Picked up a good fuse box with the entire wiring harness attached from a salvage yard for $450. Took it to whiteford Kenworth body shop in south bend Indiana. They changed the box and rewired the truck. Took two days at a cost of $1500. Other shops were quoting crazy numbers but the Kenworth body shop was like no big deal. Whiteford thought it would take a day but the salvage yard cut some of the wires when they took it out of the truck so the body shop had a few wires to fix.

I had a similar issue and all I did was replace the fuses and clean up the sockets where they plugged into the panel real good. No problems since. Might have good luck in the Garage section of the site for more information.

    Same here.
You can remove the terminals from the fuse box by inserting a tiny precision flat blade screwdriver in the front of the fuse box to depress the locking tab of the terminal, then pull the wire (gently) out the back to clean and adjust it well. By adjust I mean get the terminal massaged so it will hold the relay blades tight.
It was a pain, you have to be patient. The fuse box does not have much movement even with all the screws removed to get in there easily with the mass of wires coming out the back. I managed with a lot of patience and a small mechanics mirror because you can't get your head behind there to see what your doing. Totally doable though.

Exactly. I did even less actually. I disconnected the batteries, sanded the contacts down until they were nice and shiny again then finally squeezed the contacts closer together to give a better contact for the new fuses. Of course, I don't know what the box looks like on the OP's truck but sounds like something they might want to check out.

Another trick that can work good to clean things up........

Put some pumice hand cleaner on the fuse or relay spades and run it in and out of the fuse/relay location that is all nastied up. The more pumice the better. The abrasives in the soap will clean the corrosion on the inside of the pin with little effort. Follow up with some electrical contact cleaner and blow dry with a blow gun or air duster. A small amount of Phillips Dielectric paste will keep the corrosion at bay. May not be a permanent fix but can definitely help get things working again.

I have repaired some KW's with a totally melted out fuse or relay connector. They all had unused ones and I just rewired to them. Some of the Petes have room for extra circuit breakers at the bottom. Maybe just install one and wire to that if everything else looks good.

    FAQs

Are fuse panels up to code? ›

Let's take a look at some of the common questions we get from customers. Q: Are fuse panels still legal? A: No, per our electrical code electricians cannot install them today. However, our electrical code can't force you to replace the one you have now.

How do you check panel fuses? ›

If the power's out in your home or car, you should be able to check the fuses simply by looking at them. Look inside the fuse in question for black charred marks or a broken filament wire. If you can't see any obvious signs, you can always use a test light or multimeter to figure out if the fuse is working properly.

Where is the fuse control panel? ›

Usually, you will find two fuse boxes in the car. One is located under the hood and the other is found in the dashboard or near the steering wheel.

Can I put a higher amp fuse in my fuse box? ›

In summary, replacing a fuse with a higher amp rating compromises the safety mechanisms designed to protect against over-current conditions. It is crucial to use the correct fuse rating to ensure the safe operation of electrical appliances and prevent potential catastrophic events.

Are fuse panels still legal? ›

Is it illegal to have an old fuse box? No, you're not going to be hauled off to jail if your home has an old fuse box. It's definitely legal to have one; however, your home may not be up to code. The National Fire Protection Association publishes the National Electrical Code, which has been adopted by all 50 states.

How do you know if a fuse needs to be replaced? ›

Remove the fuse from its holder. In some cases you may need a small screwdriver to unscrew the fuse holder cap. Look at the fuse wire. If there is a visible gap in the wire or a dark or metallic smear inside the glass then the fuse is blown and needs to be replaced.

How to reset a blown fuse? ›

Unlike a circuit breaker, a blown fuse can't be switched back on. To fix it, you will need to replace the fuse with one of the same amperage rating (more on this below).

    Can you replace a 3amp fuse with a 5 amp fuse? ›

Depends on why your PAT testers are asking, if the equipment is blowing 3amp but not 5amp fuses, it's less of a risk having 5amp as they don't create a fire hazard. Caveat being that you have Residual Current Devices in place that eliminate any electrical hazard. If they have simply run out of 3amp then of course not.

Where is the secondary fuse box? ›

The main fuse box is typically located under the hood, while secondary fuse panels might be inside the car, often near the dashboard or steering wheel. The fuse's wire conductor breaks when the current exceeds the ampere limit, which manufacturers usually define along with different color codes on each fuse.

Where is the fuse box on a truck? ›

Most vehicles have two fuse boxes, with one under the hood and the other in the cabin. You can usually find the other fuse box in the dashboard on the driver's side, but some manufacturers also place it below the glove box.

Where is the fuse on a Peterbilt 379 headlight? ›

The fuse and realy are both in the same spot on this truck. If you open the door of the driver side, while standing on the step, look at the driver's foot area. There is a panel that you access. Behind that panel is the fuse box and relays.

Can you sell a house with a fuse panel? ›

Yes, you can sell a house with an old fuse box. However, fuse boxes, especially old ones, are off-putting to many potential buyers since they're often not capable of handling the electrical needs of modern homes and appliances.

Are old fuse boxes still legal? ›

Are old fuse boxes illegal. No, old fuse boxes are not illegal. However, if you do have an old fuse box in your property please consider health and safety. It might not be compliant with current regulations and won't have the latest RCD protection which could save your life.

Can I get insurance on a house with a fuse box? ›

With homeowners wrongly repairing fuses, a need for a new system was used and insurance companies began charging premiums for homes with fuses. Today, it can be difficult for a homeowner to receive insurance with a fuse box. You may have to pay more yearly or, you may have to replace your fuse box altogether.
