Is the Aqueduct closing in 2026? ›

Unlike in 1968 when Aqueduct Racetrack remained open following major construction at Belmont Park, this time the beloved city track, open since 1894, will close its gates forever once racing resumes at the newest incarnation of Belmont Park (projected to be spring of 2026).

NYRA first moved the Belmont fall meet to Aqueduct this year so that tunnels could be built that would provide access to the infield.

In December 2022 the New York Racing Association formally announced its intention to upgrade the facilities at nearby Belmont Park to make it suitable to host year-round thoroughbred racing and training, which would ultimately lead to the closure of Aqueduct Racetrack, sometime in late 2026.
