Status Update: Amazon building grocery store in Fullerton Town Center (2024)

Amazon is building a second grocery store concept in Orange County, this time in a former Toys R Us in Fullerton.

Matt Foulkes, the city’s director of Community and Economic Development, confirmed the e-commerce titan bought the store at 1100 South Harbor Blvd. in the Fullerton Town Center. The new grocery store will be a short walk from Costco.

“The floorplan for the grocery story looks remarkably similar to a Whole Foods in terms of layout and food offerings,” Foulkes wrote the Register in an email. “This location will be a great project and a nice additional grocery option for south Fullerton.”

Amazon has been developing several grocery store concepts in Southern California. It has three under development in Los Angeles County and another near completion in Irvine in a former Babies R Us at the Market Place shopping center on Jamboree Road.

The online retailer has not been very forthcoming about its grocery concepts. Bloomberg News got inside the store in Woodland Hills, describing it as pretty typical with numbered aisles for staples such as rice, beans, pasta and canned vegetables.

In the back of the 33,000-square-foot space, which is about average size for a supermarket, sits a meat and seafood counter. There’s also an area called “Fresh Kitchen” for prepared foods and soups.

There’s no timeline on the opening of the Fullerton grocery store. The Irvine store also has yet to open.
