How to read the Dunkel Index? ›

The “rating” is the power number given to each team. The higher the rating, the better the team. The ratings have been calculated to easily interpret the relative strengths of teams. For example, a team with a rating of 70.0 (Team A) is 10 points better than a team with a rating of 60.0 (Team B).

The Dunkel System, also known as the Dunkel College Football Index, is a college football rating system developed in 1929 by Richard C. "Dick" Dunkel, Sr. (1906–1975), to determine a national champion. Dunkel rated college football teams from 1929 until his death in 1975.

Don't confuse Dunkelweizen, an ale, with Dunkel lager, also called Munich Dunkel. Dunkel simple means “dark.” Dunkelweizen, like Hefeweizen, is a wheat ale, just a dark one. But it's not a stretch to think of Dunkelweizen as a cross between a Hefeweizen and a Munich Dunkel. The style displays characteristics of both.

Dunkels might just as easily be confused with Vienna-style lagers, or with Märzen, a German beer often consumed at Oktoberfests. These, too, are dark lagers but generally more reddish than dunkels, with the aroma of hops a little more apparent.

Dunkel is traditionally brewed largely from dark Munich malt, which has a toasty, slightly caramelized character. These flavors are often deepened by intensive decoction mashing, which helps develop the toffee-like melanoidin flavors.
